JUNIOR GOLF: the next generation

With computer games dominating our children’s thoughts it is not surprising that many parents look for out door psychical activities to stimulate their kids. Golf is one of the many activities they turn too and for good reason. Golf gets us in the open air; provides psychical training at many different levels; provides self discipline if we are to improve; it is a game with longevity and can be a great social and business asset. Not to mention the fame and riches it can provide if we make it to the top of the sport!

Junior development is a specialist area and one that requires proper training on so many levels – first and foremost if we are to win the hearts and minds of the next generation we have to make sure that golf is fun, to this end learning must be light hearted and not to serious, this is the sure way to lose them before they even start in the game. We have to make sure that development is quick and easy, constantly developing new ways and equipment for them to start with. Then we have to provide a safe and fun environment for them to play golf in, both physically and mentally.

When the game is fun and safe we can then look at the longer term development of both the game and the life skills that can be transferred. We have to inspire them both to be champions or simply just to want to keep playing on a regular basis and form part of their lives. The possibilities for inspiration are far and wide: from the current crop of champions to making the game interactive with social media and other such technologies that occupy their thoughts.
